Dear fellow Sibolettes
In Mrs T’s brilliant SIBOL blog on Friday 28 October 2011 she showed pictures of the “Irish Rose” squares I had made using Patricia Hewitt’s free pattern.
I’m a fan of Ms Hewitt’s squares and this one is a particular favourite.
As it got some lovely comments Mrs T whispered to me that she was thinking about using this pattern as a new Challenge. I think it would be a stunning blanket. What do you think?
Please email Sue on sueatpigsty@talktalk.net (For jenniferannes version!)

2012 Challenges.
I have added a couple of 'Challenges' to this Blog as it is the start of 2012.
Now these aren't our usual Challenges and please do not feel that you have to take part in any of the following ideas.
I am often asked if Ladies can make their own Blankets for 'SIBOL'. Well of course you can and I have had Ladies who have already done so. So.............I'm just going to give you rough guidelines and then it's entirely up to you.
Now the first Challenge I am going to talk about is
13. 'Make your own 'SIBOL' Blanket from Squares.' - 'Challenge is OPTIONAL'.
Why not make a 'SIBOL' Blanket yourself? If you enjoy making Squares Crocheted or Knitted of whatever pattern and you like making a lot of them then instead of sending individual Squares to me, why not assemble them yourself?
Our usual 'SIBOL' Squares are 6" x 6" (15cms x 15cms).
With a Border of 1" to 2".
So roughly the finished Blanket will be 37"/38".
The Squares can be joined in whatever fashion you like.
Sewing them together or Crocheting them together.
The Blanket can be Knitted or Crocheted.
Acrylic please if possible.
OR
IF YOU WANT TO USE ANY OTHER SIZE SQUARE IN YOUR BLANKETS PLEASE DO.
OUR BLANKETS ARE USUALLY 36 - 38".
If you are kind enough to send a whole Blanket you will go into our 'Hall of Fame' over on RAVELRY!
14. 'Make your own 'SIBOL' - 'Large Granny Square' Blanket' - 'Challenge is OPTIONAL'.
Are you new to Crocheting and feel that you have only just mastered the UK treble?
Are you confident making a Granny Square but haven't progressed to more advanced Squares?
Or maybe you find just working up a Granny Square is relaxing?
Then why not use that unwanted stash of yarn and make a 'SIBOL' Granny Square Blanket?
The Blanket must be 36" x 36" Square with a border added on
Use any 'unwanted' yarn you have.
If you have any yarn that you absolutely hate, why not use it for this project. For example (Plain Black yarn). Even if they are 'manly' colours these Blankets will be very well received by people who need them.
You may want to make a magic ball of yarn by tying odd scaps together then just working it up to make a 36" Granny Square of various colours! Why not!
I can assure you 'SIBOL' can make use of your yarn!
It's also a good way of getting rid of your old stuff to make room for new yarn!
If you are kind enough to send a whole Blanket you will go into our 'Hall of Fame' over on RAVELRY!
15.'Do you have any unwanted Crocheted or Knitted Blankets at home?
A 'SIBOLETTE' over on RAVELRY has recently asked me if 'SIBOL' could use a Blanket which she made and does not require for a member of her Family. Well what do you think my answer was!
Of course we can. I do hate to see Blankets go to waste. There are lots of Elderly folk who would love a Blanket to throw over their knees. So if you have have a Blanket which you now can't use for whatever reason, or you just don't like the finished item, why not donate this to 'SIBOL?'. I would be very happy to accept it for the Elderly in the UK.
So guidelines are....
It must be clean.
It can be any size Blanket.
The Squares can be of any size.
If you are unsure of whether I can accept it then please contact me
Sue on sueatpigsty@talktalk.net
These last three 'Challenges' are what they say 'OPTIONAL'.
You do not have to take part in them, or indeed any of the Challenges above.
Please feel free to do whatever you want to do!

GENERAL INFORMATION.
There are rather a lot of Challenges, but please notice I have limited the number of Squares!
I reserve the right to close a Challenge if I get too many Squares for that particular Challenge.
When I delivered the Blankets into the Nursing Homes, the Ladies 'The Residents and the Staff' particularly liked the Picture Square Blankets like the Spring, Farm and Young at Heart themes.
They took such a lot of interest in each Square this is why I thought we'd do some more.
Our 'Sunshine Blankets' were definitely a 'talking point' in the Nursing Homes.
When I spoke to the Residents they were just absolutely amazed at the talent of the Ladies all over the World. They looked in great detail at the Squares. I pointed out quite a lot of them. I showed them the beautiful Flower Squares and Picture Squares
they thought they were so pretty! Thank you always for supporting my SIBOL project.
they thought they were so pretty! Thank you always for supporting my SIBOL project.
I am desperately trying to get your Squares 6" x 6" because if they are any bigger it costs me more in yarn.
I crochet around EACH Square and then crochet them together.
If the Squares vary in size I have to crochet around the sides to get all the smaller ones the same size as the largest one. Sometimes there is a lot of filling in to be done. Then I tend to get bored. I tend to use around 100gms a Blanket to actually edge the Square and then do one row around the Blanket before the Border.
We welcome Beginners/More Experienced Ladies.
Please don't ever feel your Crocheting is not good enough.
The other thing is - I worry about the cost of postage to you all. Please don't think you have to send me piles of Squares. The last thing I want is for anyone to be out of pocket. I would be grateful for ONE Square honestly! I know the postage is so....expensive! We all have to think of our families first!
What to do when you have made your Square.
Make sure it is 6" x 6" Please.
Then attach a small label to your Square giving me your Name
Like here:
On a piece of paper please write the following information.
Your Email Address ( So I can acknowledge receipt of Squares)
Your Name and Address
Your Flickr User Name (if any)
Your Internet User Name
Your Blog Address.
Tell me which Challenge.
ENCLOSE IT WITH YOUR SQUARES.
What happens next.
Your Squares are sent to me and when they arrive I email you to let you know they have arrived!
I make a record of your 'delivery' in my book.
I take some photographs and record them on Flickr. This is my visual record.
I showcase your Squares and maybe make a Slide Show if it's working on the
This is where I thank you once again and show you off to the World.
Some Ladies do not want their Squares put on the main SIBOL Blog. Please tell me if you don't.
But I have to put them on Flickr as this is my visual record.
Then your Squares go off to meet their Little Friends in the 'waiting bay'.
I sort the Squares into piles then, some for Challenges, some in groups according to colour.
When I have enough I make them into Blankets.
Due to the high demand of Squares arriving at SIBOL HQ,
please be aware that it might be awhile before you see your Square appear in a Blanket.
Challenge Squares will be shown earlier.
I started this project in Memory of my Grandmother who lived to the age of 103. I loved her dearly and after doing so much Crocheting for myself I thought it was time to help others. I knew straight away I wanted to Crochet Blankets for the Elderly. With your fantastic help I am pleased to say that on the 1st December we had made 122 'Sunshine Blankets' totalling 3,050 Squares assembled. What an achievement! I still have lots of work to be done.
Thank you for your help!
'SIBOL' relys on donations to keep the project running and if you feel you can help in any way please contact Sue on sueatpigsty@talktalk.net
